Where are sex offenders on Halloween? Worried about your kids knocking on doors of sex offenders while trick or treating? Kids in Okeechobee are busy getting their Halloween costumes ready. The overall focus is to keep children safe, especially on a night when there's so many of them outdoors. Okeechobee County currently has (109) sex offenders and (9) predators, that register with the Sheriff's Office. Florida's number of registered sex offenders is rising dramatically. Restrictions can vary from case to case, depending on court-ordered probation requirements and the crimes committed. Some offenders and predators have no restrictions. Gilbert Ford and the Okeechobee Fraternal Order of Police are partnering this Friday, October 19, for Ford’s Drive 4 UR Community event. However, we are not asking for your money, just a few minutes of your time and best of all, you get to test drive a brand new Ford vehicle. For every test-drive taken, Ford Motor Company will donate $20 towards the building of a public dog park and Sheriff's Office K9 training grounds. In total, the community can help raise up to $6,000, an amount that will prove to be beneficial to our mission! This fundraising event is a unique way to obtain some of those necessary funds. HOW TO HELP HURRICANE MICHAEL VICTIMS: WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, wreaking havoc on the communities that lay in its path. The Category 4 storm, one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the continental United States in 50 years, brought heavy winds, rain, and flooding to the Florida panhandle and Gulf Coast, as well as Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas, which are still recovering from Hurricane Florence. At least 17 people died because of the storm. The affected communities need help rebuilding. Volunteers of the Quarter

COP Team - Jim and Bev McVeigh received the Volunteer of Quarter Award from Colonel Gary Bell and Sheriff Noel Stephen. The dynamic duo was nominated by their Supervisor, Jack Nash, for their part for recognizing an unknown suspicious vehicle occupied by a subject going door to door within an area they frequently patrol as part of their Citizen On Patrol route. The two realized very fast that this person was up to some criminal activity and notified dispatch immediately. With the vital description of the vehicle and subject, Sheriff's Office deputies located and arrested the subject, who had committed several burglaries in the area.
