Sheriff Paul C. May has released the following information:Re: Discovery of Human Skul
On February 11, 2011, at approximately 8:18 p.m., deputies were dispatched in reference to a human skull being found at a residence in the southeast section of Okeechobee County, Florida.
Upon arrival, deputies were notified by the owners that they had just recently purchased the home and were cleaning out a shed when they discovered a suitcase. The homeowner opened the suitcase and discovered what appeared to be that of a human skull.
Detective Rick Durfee of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, responded and took possession of the suitcase containing the human skull. After initial examination of the suitcase and the contents, there was information which led Detective Durfee to estimate the property has been in the home in excess of thirty years. It is believed that the skull is that of an anatomical skull model, similar to one used in medical school training.
At this time, the skull has been turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis.
This case will remain under investigation pending the results of the Medical Examiner’s Office. No other information to release at this time.
