Sheriff Paul C. May has released the following information:
Reference: Suicide of Inmate
On November 3, 2010, at approximately 00:05 hours, deputies responded to the Okeechobee County Jail in reference to an inmate suicide. It was learned that an inmate had hung herself. The victim is as follows:
The victim had been incarcerated in the Okeechobee County Jail since March 15, 2010, for a bond revocation of the original charge of four (4) counts of Possession of Controlled Substance Without Valid Prescription, Criminal Use of Personal Information and Trespass School Grounds. The bond revocation was a result of new charges on May 26, 2010, by Florida Highway Patrol for DUI Manslaughter‐Failure to Render Aid, Leaving the Scene of Accident Involving Death and DUI Manslaughter(Impairment). These charges stemmed from an investigation of an accident in which Ms. Howard was the driver.
According to the St. Lucie County Medical Examiner’s Office, the official cause of death has been determined to be asphyxiation by hanging. A suicide note was found.
The victim’s family has been notified.
Sheriff May said of the death, “I’m very sorry this happened. We do everything we can to keep this from happening, but the fact remains if someone wants to hurt themselves, they can. We never saw this coming or were given any sign she was planning this. My thoughts and prayers go to the family.”
