On Sunday, March 6, 2016, at approximately 4:00 a.m., the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call to assist Highlands County Sheriff’s Office. The call was in reference to a boater in the Kissimmee River, whose boat was taking on water and sinking. Sgt. Randy Thomas and Deputy Chris Weeks responded and found one side of the pontoon boat under water. Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) also arrived and transported the men to safety.
On Tuesday, March 15, 2016, Mr. Theodore Orem, who lives in Ft. Pierce, Florida and Kokomo, Indiana, came to the Sheriff’s Office to personally thank both deputies. Mr. Orem stated how thankful he was to have been rescued by Sgt. Thomas and Deputy Weeks. As the Highlands County dispatcher kept him calm on the phone, he didn’t have time to think about alligators or snakes.
Thank you Mr. Orem for recognizing our officers for a job well done!
