Sheriff Paul C. May has released the following information:
Re: Child Abuse Arrests
On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, Detective Rosemary Farless received an anonymous call. The caller advised that Dionicio “Nicho” Rodriguez had called and requested that she find a Hispanic male child, between the ages of eighteen (18) months and three (3) years of age. His reason for needing a male child was to show the Department of Children and Families that Camargo’s son was in fact healthy. DCF had been investigating the family for possible child abuse. Rodriguez was in fact hiding the injured child from DCF. Detective Farless along with other OCSO deputies did surveillance on the home in an attempt to locate the injured child.
At a later time, deputies conducted a traffic stop on the car in which Rodriguez was the driver. In the car with Rodriguez was Camargo, a five year old female and the two year old victim. Camargo is the biological mother to both children. Neither child was in child restraints or car seats.
Both children were taken into custody, turned over to DCF and taken to Raulerson Hospital. X-rays showed the two year old victim had multiple rib fractures; two ribs had two fractures; three ribs had one fracture and one rib had three fractures. The child also sustained a broken leg(femur bone), broken completely in half. The two year old child was transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital in Palm Beach County for further medical treatment. The two year old victim remains in the hospital.
The five year old female child had a large visible bruise to her upper left arm. When asked how she sustained the bruise, detectives were told that “Nicho was mad and had punched her because she didn’t tell him the DCF lady was at the door.”
Camargo said she knew her child needed medical treatment, but she worried DCF would take her kids away therefore she did not seek medical treatment.
Dionicio Rodriguez was arrested for Aggravated Child Abuse/Neglect(Medical) and Aggravated Child Abuse(Malicious Punishment) and Driving While License Revoked with Knowledge. Camargo was arrested for Aggravated Child Abuse/Neglect(Medical). Rodriguez is currently being held on $151,000.00 bond and Camargo is being held on a $10,000.00 bond.
Major Noel Stephen said of the arrests, "These cases are extremely hard on our communities and our officers. We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our officers to save these children and remove these criminals from our community."
This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges are pending. No other information can be released at this time.
