Sheriff Paul C. May has released the following information:Re: Accidental Death
On March 7, 2011, at approximately 1:00 p.m., a 911 call was received in reference to a male subject, on a golf cart, engulfed in flames. Deputies were dispatched to 3705 SW 28 Street, Okeechobee Florida.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that the victim, Mr. Lowell Edwin Smith, 94 YOA, along with the golf cart, was engulfed in flames.
Prior to the arrival of Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue, the fire spread approximately fifty feet from the point of origin. Once on scene, EMS extinguished the fire and pronounced Mr. Smith deceased.
Detective M.D. Faulkner responded to the scene and was told of the circumstances leading up to the incident. According to Mr. Smith’s sister, Georgianna Sweat, Mr. Smith was on his golf cart and had started a small fire in order to burn a tree stump and some boxes. Mr. Smith had been outside for approximately thirty minutes. Ms. Sweat, being concerned of her brother’s safety, began to look for him. It was then that Ms. Sweat discovered the fire and found her brother deceased at that time.
The preliminary investigation, shows that Mr. Smith either lost his balance or had health issues which caused him to fall into the fire.
The exact cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office. This case will remain under investigation. No further information to release at this time.
