CORRECTIONS

The Corrections Division consists of a wide variety of services and components that provide basic care and custody for every person arrested and held in jail.

The facility is staffed by both sworn and non-sworn members. The facility consists of four housing units of various custody levels and capacities and 2 negative pressure rooms with a total bed capacity of 232. The Corrections Division is composed of 75 professionals.

The Detention Deputy Captain is responsible for the overall operation of the facility including all administrative and security operations. The Detention Deputy Lieutenant is responsible for the daily operations of the Jail, and supervises four shifts, with a total security complement of 58 sworn members, including Detention Deputies, Transportation Deputies, and Court House Security.

Inmate Information

Mail:
Inmates may receive mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service or private delivery service. We receive deliveries Monday through Friday.

Effective October 4, 2011, all general correspondence mail will be limited to plain, pre‐stamped postcards only. This new policy is for the safety of the staff at the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office, Corrections Division, and inmates. Privileged/Legal mail will continue to be allowed to be sent via envelopes. All Privileged/Legal mail must have a recognizable, legitimate address of a legal firm or other governmental units. Inmates may purchase either pre‐stamped postcards or envelopes from the commissary to use for outgoing mail. Any incoming correspondence deemed not privileged/legal mail, with a stamp on it, will be returned to the sender.

Any letter or correspondence, of any type, found within the envelope will not be forwarded to the inmate. The entire policy is posted in the jail reception area and all dorms.

Inmates cannot receive any incoming phone calls. All calls placed by an inmate must be collect or debit. Inmates on disciplinary status cannot utilize the phone until their disciplinary status has ended. Inmates on medical status may use the phones on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Family members may contact Telmate customer service at 1-866-516-0115 to set up an account to receive phone calls from inmates.

Visitation Hours:
Visitation for inmates at the Okeechobee County Jail has changed. Please refer to the posted policy at the Jail. Some of the Revisions are as follows:

  • All visitors must be on the inmate's approved list.

  • Telephones in the Visitation Room must be utilized during the visit. Failure to comply may result in Termination of visit.

  • Visitors may not visit more than one inmate except in case of family relationships.

  • Due to the size of the Visitation/Public Lobby Area, only inmate visitors will be allowed to remain in the Visitation/Lobby Area or on the front steps.

  • Only two visitors per inmate, per visitation period will be allowed except for periods where minors are allowed to visit.

  • Children may not be left unattended or unsupervised in a motor vehicle as described in F.S. 316.6135 while the parent or legal guardian visits an inmate.

  • Once an inmate has been at the Jail facility for 30 consecutive days he/she may have a visit with his/her minor children and thereafter every 30 consecutive days.

  • Some visitors will be required to utilize the video visitation stations.

  • Once a Visitation List has been approved, no changes shall be made. Additions or deletions can be made once every 60 days.

All visitors are required to schedule their visits in advance. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Reservations are accepted Monday through Friday either in person or by phone at (863) 357-5340 after 10:30 am. Appropriate dress and picture ID are required.

Commissary:
Inmates may receive through the mail or place in the drop box located in the Jail lobby a money order only, for their commissary account. The money order must have the inmate's name and the letters OCITF on the payee line. Cash may be deposited in the lobby of the Jail in the Kiosk machine for the inmate's commissary account. All money in the inmate's individual account may be used for purchasing commissary items and will be used for expenses incurred (Initial Substance Fee, Medical Co-pay, Etc.).

Care Package:
Inmates are not allowed to receive any type of care package with the exception of within the first seven days of incarceration, the family may bring in up to 4, Tee Shirts, Underwear, Socks, and Sports Bra (No Wire), and must be new and white only. Any other item may be purchased from the commissary.

Medical:
Healthcare is provided to inmates by contracting with a local physician. The Medical Department is staffed by 2 full-time nurses, No civilian staff will be denied medical care because of insufficient funds.

Programs:
Various programs are available to inmates incarcerated in the Detention Division. These include programs such as Alcohol and Drug counseling, and various religious programs both in English and Spanish. Work release and trustee programs are also available.

Inmate Work Crew:
The Jail supports one inmate work crew. The work crew is supervised by Detention Deputies and travels throughout the county cleaning up roadsides. They average over 10,000 pounds of trash weekly and 2,500 pounds of discarded tires monthly. In addition, the Jail provides inmate trustees to various county facilities weekly.

Food Service:
The food service department consists of 6 full-time staff. The staff and inmates serve more than 27,000 meals per month to include the Senior Meals Program.
