Traffic Fatality Leads to Grow House Discovery
On Friday, March 21, 2013, at approximately 11:27 p.m. deputies responded to a traffic crash at the 168th block of Highway 441 North, Okeechobee, Florida.
Deputies found a single vehicle crash. The victim of the crash, Abey Diaz Pino, age 44, was pronounced deceased. The crash was turned over to Florida Highway Patrol to investigate.
Florida Highway Patrol responded to 1185 NE 342 Trail, Okeechobee, Florida to notify the next of kin. Upon arrival, no one was located, however it was discovered that there were multiple dogs at the home. Okeechobee County Sheriff's Deputy Hazy stood by until Animal Control could retrieve the animals. During this time, Deputy Hazy recognized visible signs of a marijuana grow house.
On Monday, March 24, 2014, a search warrant was obtained and executed at the above address. The Okeechobee County Narcotics Task Force discovered (87) active plants, with a total weight of (22) pounds. The estimated street value of the marijuana was approximately $88,000.00.
